It's all in the Masking
Whether you are painting the columns or the railings, one must mask off the opposite. Masking the deck tops is a must in any circumstance. The wind will carry just about anything with it, including paint overspray. So the answer is to not let it blow into the wind and onto your clients deck.

Often times it is hard to tell what painters are actually doing. It is because we are taking into account what shouldn’t happen as much as what we want to happen. I think we are starting to mask off the stonework so we can stain the woodwork above.
